In a form of symmetry this session of talks opened and closed with Rwanda.
Judith Goodburn gave us a
humbling talk about her visit for Christian Aid a couple of years ago.
Highlighting the fact that not enormous sums are required but just a few pence per head are
able to transform lives. She stressed that visits
are self-funded and that all the monies go to the charities rather
than government. Rural Rwandan people have so very little that everything
is recycled, tin cans are transformed into funnels and cooking
utensils, labels used as notepaper, plastic bottles for oil storage.
They use what they can grow; plantain leaves for cleaning, footballs
and hats, sisal plants to make ropes. Always welcoming, many villages had
never seen Europeans before. Most tourists are American visiting the
eastern highland forests to see only the gorillas. A donation was made to
Christian Aid.
