St Peter's
Memorial Plaques Pre
1742
This is one of the most
interesting plaques. It is only about 8 in by 8.25 in, made of brass sheet
and hand engraved in a
17th century script format.
It was one of few items
saved from the earlier chapel before the rebuilding work and re-opening of
St Peter's in its present form in 1742. There is extra decoration of a
frame, also in the bottom corners a child-like skull & cross bones
and a simple
skull in the bottom centre, typical of this period. This lady lived through the English Civil war
and was contemporary with
John Bradshawe the one and only ever President of Britain
& the Commonwealth. She may possibly have seen Oliver Cromwell and many of
the senior Roundhead Officers visiting here in Congleton. The plate
appears to have pistol shot marks.
